Colorful melting snow drinks, a favorite among children and adults, are now exposed because researchers warn that they can be dangerous for children under the age of 8. Experts warn that these drinks can trigger toxic syndrome, causing symptoms such as loss of consciousness and a sudden drop in blood sugar.

A recent study This evaluated 21 cases of seriously sick children after consuming one of the melting snow ice drinks containing glycerol determined that they all suffered from the glycerol poisoning syndrome. Glycerol is a natural alcohol widely used as a solvent, sweetening agent and in the production of drugs. In the melting snow, it helps maintain their semi-liquid texture by lowering the water freezing point.

Researchers from the University College Dublin examined the medical notes of cases treated in emergency care after consuming the drink between 2018 and 2024 across the United Kingdom and Ireland. Patients were children aged two to seven.

Most cases have developed signs, including loss of consciousness within the hour of consumption of melting snow. Four of the patients needed cerebral scanners and one had a crisis. They have also shown symptoms such as hypoglycemia (drop in blood sugar), lactic acidosis (accumulation of lactate causing acid pH) and hypokalemia (low potassium). All patients recovered after treatment and were invited not to drink mud.

The researchers noted that if many snowy brands lists their ingredients online, the exact concentration of glycerol is often not clear. This lack of transparency raises concerns, because even small dosage or mixture errors could lead to unexpected glycerol levels, which would have contributed to many cases they have observed.

“There is poor transparency around the concentration of glycerol with melting snow; the estimate of a safe dose is therefore not easy. It is also likely that the speed and dose of ingestion, as well as other aspects such as the drink is consumed alongside a meal or during a state of fast Review in the archives of disease in childhood.

Based on their results, researchers urge clinicians and parents to recognize risks and call public health authorities to provide clear advice. They point out that young children, especially those under the age of eight, should avoid melting snow drinks containing glycerol. While the United Kingdom and Ireland have issued warnings concerning these drinks, no specific directive currently exists in the United States.
