Can weight loss always be the answer to obesity? Although it is well known that getting weight increases the risk of heart disease and death, scientists have now found that the loss of a significant amount of weight can also carry its own set of dangers.
In a recent study, researchers at Anglia Ruskin University (ARU) in the United Kingdom have found that for people with obesity, “maintain stable weight, even in the obese range”, can help reduce the risk of death, especially for those who have risk factors for heart disease.
“It was perhaps not surprising that a significant weight gain was associated with higher mortality, but interesting that a similar association was found among those who have lost a lot of weight,” said researcher Dr. Jufen Zhang in a press release.
The study analyzed the data of more than 8,000 obese participants from the British Biobank study, which had all been diagnosed with cardiovascular disease. These individuals were followed over almost 14 years old, researchers closely monitoring their weight changes throughout the period.
The results revealed that participants who won more than 10 kg during the study had triple increased risk of cardiovascular death and almost double the risk of dying of any cause, compared to those who have maintained stable weight.
However, the study revealed an even more striking observation: those who lost more than 10 kg were faced with a higher risk of mortality of 54%. This suggests that, although weight loss is often encouraged for obese people, significant weight loss can have harmful effects, especially in those already at risk of cardiovascular problems.
“This study is the first of its kind to examine the link between the change in weight and mortality of all causes of causes in obese people with cardiovascular disease,” said Dr. Zhang.
Although more research is needed to fully understand the underlying mechanisms behind the link between weight loss and weight gain and increased risk of death, Dr. Zhang advises that “clinicians should be careful, especially with new drugs on the market which are favored for rapid weight loss”.
“Although weight loss is generally recommended for obese adults, those of risk groups, such as these people, should only continue weight loss under the in -depth direction of their doctor,” added Dr. Zhang.
