The Los Angeles County Sans -Abrisme leaders said nearly 30,000 permanent housing investments last year – an annual summit for the sprawling region of 10 million residents. Thousands of others have entered the shelter and short -term housing.

Governor Gavin Newsom and local leaders have celebrated progress as evidence that an unprecedented public investment of several billion dollars to keep people from the street away.

Then the forest fires struck.

The first evidence suggests that the opposite January disaster of hard gains to bring people to permanent housing. Local leaders say that the devastating fulaux moved thousands of people, some who barely made their bills and could not find affordable accommodation has now become homeless in the middle of an already tense housing offer.

“We already see that some people have moved into their vehicles because they do not have the money to pay even for temporary accommodation,” said Va Lecia Adams Kellum, CEO of the Los Angeles Homeless Services Authority.

Among the displaced people previously appeared from the homeless like Alexandria Castaneda, 29, who lived in a sober house in Altadena called Art House while she recovered from an addiction to methamphetamine. She and dozens of other residents have evacuated safely and watched the two -story house on flames on live television. The non -profit organization that exploits Art House is now trying to rehabilitate those inappropriate.

“It is a constant stress of not knowing if I am going to be in a stable accommodation situation,” said Castaneda, who moved into a temporary shelter after fires.

A large part of the progress made by the County of Los Angeles was due in part to locally approved measures which have injected billions of dollars into housing efforts. But it is also the result of the amazing investment of 27 billion dollars of the State to tackle itinerant on the scale of the state.

Local officials and state legislators claim that the State must provide without delegated additional funding. But these calls arise against political requests for results.

Newsom wants a responsibility on how homeless funds are spent.

The governor with two mandates, who has made homelessness a central objective of his administration, says that he is open to negotiations, subject to strict requirements so that cities and counties use funding to erase camps and dismantle speed tents on the underside of the highway, the city’s sidewalks and the river beds.

Without more concentration on unaccomposed homelessness, “I am not inclined to continue to support the financing of cities and counties,” Newsom said at a press conference on February 24. “We were too permissive with regard to camps and tents.”
