In a really remarkable and rare medical case, doctors in India have managed to remove a parasitic twin of 30 pounds from a teenager, an underdeveloped twin whose boy could feel touch and pain.

The unidentified 17 -year -old man from Uttar Pradesh, a state in northern India, had a rare case of parasitic twin which exceeded his abdomen. The underdeveloped twin, which consisted of two fully formed legs, buttocks and external genitals, pushed directly from his body.

A parasitic twin occurs when one of the joint twins does not develop completely inside the uterus. The joint twins are already extremely rare, occurring in only one out of 50,000 to 100,000 births, and parasitic twins are even rarer, with only 40 cases documented so far.

In a complex surgery carried out at the All-India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIMS) in Delhi last month, doctors managed to remove the remains of the parasitic twin, offering the boy a “new world” after having faced isolation and emotional stress because of his condition.

“I couldn’t travel anywhere or do any physical activity. Now a new world has opened up to me. I hope to study and find a job”, the boy, the boy said Indian Express.

When the patient first presented himself to the hospital, doctors carefully assessed how the parasitic twin was linked to the host’s body. Detailed analyzes revealed that the twin was firmly attached to the teenager and received blood from a ship in his chest. However, there was no significant ties with vital organs such as liver or kidneys. Doctors also found a large cyst in the abdomen.

The surgery was carried out in two stages: first, by removing the parasitic twin, then in extraction of the cyst. The adolescent’s blood pressure has dropped dangerously during surgery, because 30 to 40% of his blood was diverted to the parasitic twin. However, doctors were well prepared for this and stabilize it quickly.

“A network of shared blood vessels, nerves and tissues had to be separated. Care must have been taken to see that none of the organs or tissues of the host has been damaged,” said Dr. Asuri Krishna, who managed the surgical team said.

The teenager was released just four days after the procedure and he has since recovered without any complications.
