A 34-year-old nurse in the United Kingdom has taken on a common combination of drugs for years, never suspecting the silent danger that hides in her daily routine. However, a recent coroner report revealed that a little -known and fatal drug interaction was responsible for his sudden heart arrest and his death.
Chloé Burgess de Southampton, in England, had taken the antidepressants amitriptyline (a tricyclic antidepressant) and paroxetine (selective inhibitors of serotonin-relaxation (SSRIS) before the doctors prescribe its Ivabradine. Branch of the bundle, a condition that disrupts electric signals from the heart.
A recent investigation into his unexplained death in 2023 revealed that his heart medication was likely to interact with his antidepressant, causing high levels of amitriptyline in his blood. Burgess had been taking this combination for four years without problems. However, an episode of sleep apnea could have triggered a severe cardiac arrhythmia and sudden heart death, the coroner report revealed.
“The potential dangers of the combination of amitriptyline, paroxetine and ivabradine are not widely appreciated and does not trigger an alert on the prescription software used in primary care or by pharmacists,” said Coroner Nicholas Walker in the report.
Based on the survey results, the Coroner issued a warning to doctors and health professionals, stressing the importance of having a “complete understanding” of potential risks when prescribing Ivabradine alongside antidepressants.
“The potential dangers of the combination of drugs in the case of Chloé were not well known or appreciated by those who treat it … I am also concerned about the fact that those who prescribe Ivabradine should have a complete understanding of the potential interaction with amitriptyline and paroxetine,” said Walker.
According to the centers for disease control and prevention (CDC), SSRIs are not suitable for everyone because they can cause problems if patients have other underlying conditions or when they are taken alongside other drugs.
ISRS may have risks for people with bleeding, diabetes, epilepsy, narrow angle or serious kidney, liver or heart disease. They can increase the risk of bleeding, affect blood sugar and worsen convulsions in epileptics.
Certain drugs that can interact with SSRIs include non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) such as ibuprofen and antiplatelets such as low-dose aspirin. Other interaction drugs are theophylline, clozapine, lithium, triptans and other antidepressants, including TCA, MAOI and SNRIS.
