Before we talk about the smell, it helps to understand what is actually consisting of menstrual blood. It is not only blood flowing from a wound. Menstrual fluid is a mixture of:

Blood of the endometrium

Linter tissue

Cervical mucus

Vaginal secretions

Bacteria from vaginal microbium

All of these ingredients contribute to the blood, color, and the smell of the neighborhood. The smell changes depending on what is happening with your hormones, vaginal plants, your hygiene habits, and sometimes your diet.

In my case, the menstrual cycle usually had a metal smell – like a few copper currencies. This is completely normal and comes from iron in the blood. Menstrual blood passes through the vagina and mixed with natural secretions and bacteria, and this mixture produces a unique smell.

Common characteristics of the normal period:

Metal or similar to iron

Moderate and dirty

A little bit or look like a body
