Storm at dawn: waking up to stress

This is part 1 of a two -part series.

Ah …. morning. The beginning of a new day, a new text, new opportunities. Ideal clichies abound: sunlight and a soft breeze that gently leaks through gauze curtains, and the smell of fresh coffee fermentation, a day to seize it. But for many of us (our sickness and students), the first light does not bring the gentle sunrise but heavy weather. Instead of “New Day, New You”, there is a familiar storm that is already waiting next to the bed.

In my clinical work with people with anxiety In particular Post -shock disorderI have become more controlled by the question after their experience of waking up and what comes with it. The modernity of a new day cannot push hope, but dread – and can make the morning be punished uniquely. The act of waking up with the vow remains. Instead of natural curiosity or freshness that we may perfectly hope for, there is a preventive tightening: the body prepares, wiping the mind. Today is not like a possibility but as a danger.

And because waking up is inevitable, the awe can become a daily rehearsal shockHidden erosion, but there is no relentlessness in safety. In this post and the next, I want to highlight some aspects of this difficulty that has been reported and some of them consciousness Ways to help manage it. First, we define the problem.

Waking

To the act of waking up: If we looted the video, we can determine the exit from the spread, sleepy La-La fell into an experience barely realized-some DREAMSCAPE remains there. Then, perhaps suddenly, the reality network is launched in: Me, here, now. With this network, the context is overflowing in: today’s date, obligations, and issues that have not been resolved.

For some, this network and its contents are specific stimuli of reflex tension: facing personal interactions for the day; You should be “on” or perfect; Or “FOMO” tension about options, unfortunately, the preparatory.

For others, it is waking up itself This prompts the threat in a conditional way, directly from this modern floating – the modernity of “now”, after it has been hidden as a danger, and the generation of an increase pressure Nervous chemistry, even in the absence of a specific or specific operator. The morning itself is the trigger. More than a few of the injured shared that they have routinely reflexive ideas SuicideEvery morning – a kind of imaginative, compassionate murder instead of facing the storm.

Just breaking open tablets Fearful? Of course, this looks … strange. Perhaps even embarrassing for some, as I found in the topic gently exploring with patients. Intuitively is that the most likely concern about not reporting the result, although I did not find specific data on this topic. But this “strangeness” can add an additional layer of suffering: self -blame. Why can’t I wake up in peace, like others? Why does my mind do this? This burden makes it difficult to move from the state, which enhances the belief that the morning is to be a satisfactory personal struggle.

The immediate panic from the subconscious is a truly challenge in treatment. Unlike anxiety shirts during the day, work to determine the warning signs and apply tactics to “landing” is not really useful with panic in the middle of the flight and not “listed” to the taxi. Tasty medications-thinking about some of the sublime alprames-may save, but at the expense of the broken morning in terms of vigilance and mental clarity. Night medications to try to anticipate the vigilance storm bearing a similar danger.

So … it’s very hard. With each waking up, we have two separate paths:

  • deviationThe mind seizes the first anxiety, rotating in an unintended rehearsal, and enhancing the body’s tension and additional rule.
  • opening: With consciousness, one can stop, breathe, and see the anxiety increase as a secondary result of waking – not as a fact, but as a ritual.

There are some mental tactics, including some “Core Four” (our breathing contemplationWiping, rehearsal, exercise of sympathy) that can really benefit. We can divide it into night and morning. But first, we must realize this Sympathy Listening – the student this style of suffering, and identifying it as a common, biologically priority instead of personal failure – is in itself a good treatment. We can only soften the edges with this nice reformulation.

If waking up at dawn can feel like walking directly in the storm, then we can first name what it is. This style is common, biologically preparing, and nothing must be shy. From there, the question becomes how to prepare for the weather and how to move as soon as it reaches – the next part of this discussion. We will closely look at how to prepare for these morning storms and respond to them – practical strategies at bedtime and waking up that can help reduce the effect and transform the first moments of the day of deviation towards the opening.
