Live one step before Parkinson Written by Amos Jin July, 2025
After the first fall, something turned inside me.
I started taking precautions – not just to avoid injury,
But to protect something deeper:
My dignity.
Before Parkinson, was walking automatically.
Now, nothing is automatic.
Each step is an account.
Each movement is quiet negotiations between me and gravity.
I started seeing the world differently.
Not only as places to go – but as spaces for survival.
She started predicting the whereabouts of dangerous spots.
Zaea. Narrow entrances. Claben tiles. Low chairs.
Even the softest carpet can become a trap.
Before I walk, I think.
Where is the wall?
What can I lean?
What if you lose balance?
So I prepare –
In my opinion, in advance.
I train on the steps before I eat it.
It looks strange, and I know.
But this is the way I move now.
Sometimes I feel like a chess player,
Planning for thirty or three moves forward,
Just to make it across the room.
I don’t always get it properly.
