“You remember when people were lost and only … they discover it,” said my 13 -year -old daughter. It was right: And more than that, she benefited from something deeper on how to change the culture of the phone about the basic characteristics of how we think, feel and work in the world.

In my work as a speech specialist and a consultant, I was witnessing these changes directly, not only in my family, but in all ages that struggle with communication and learning, and attention Challenges. The most amazing thing is to monitor children who have never been exposed to what I call a “pre -Internet mentality”. How do our work methods differ from our section – and what we might lose in our growing digital world?

Pre -INTERNET mentality asks more of us

The online mentality requires continuous uncertainty: not knowing the name of the actor, the fastest path, or an answer to a question. Our brains were adapted to sit with this discomfort, and work with it, using creative strategies (Think: “It is such a man in the movie” or “his name reminded me …”.

You can think of all these efforts as “small cognitive exercises”. Now we are developing new cognitive paths that eliminate uncertainty within seconds. We no longer practice us – because we do not need it. As you change the exercise, some muscle atrophy while enhancing others. You may not be aware of that at the time – you only notice when you try to pick up tennis again or climb a very slope of stairs.

At the same time, these changes are not only bad. It is risk adopting a “deficit” mentality, believing only that “things were better at that time.” Through my work and research, I discovered that people naturally develop distinctive thinking patterns as adaptive to our digital environment. Instead of satisfactory these differences, you can help you understand your cognitive approach and those around you flourish.

The science behind thinking about the digital age

Research confirms what I was seeing in my own work Parents and motherhoodThe use of frequent technology affects attention networks and spatial treatment capabilities in measurable ways. A study conducted in 2025 for adult youth found that watching games and television was linked to increased focus Social media The view was linked to a low focus (Fehring et al., 2025). The researchers also noted, “Even short periods of use of the screen have measurable effects on the brain areas involved in cognitive control, PassionAnd social decision making

Brain imaging research is in line with the results of Dr. Gloria Mark that the average time spent on online focus is just 40 second productivity. Meanwhile, Dr. Marian Wolf’s work shows how digital reading is literally re -reading Nervous Paths for deep treatment.

Three thinking modifications I noticed

Instead of assuming a single “correct” method of thinking in the digital age, I noticed that people are developing unique cognitive strengths in response to digital environments. In my practice, I identified three distinct thinking patterns:

Deep processors: Continuous thinkers

These individuals – or evolution – have maintained the ability to sit with complexity and uncertainty. When technology fails, deep treatments often retract the immediate problem of thinking creatively in alternatives. They are comfortable to say, “I cannot remember the name, but …” and continue their story instead of stopping searching for details.

Deep processors tend to allow their minds to roam during boring Meetings, note where their ideas are drifting naturally. They may wake up at three in the morning with the ideas of the race and allow the appearance to appear instead of reaching their phones to search for solutions. After an amazing restaurant meal, they taste memory And let her settle before the desire to know more.

Their hidden strength: Deep processors often develop really innovative solutions and get a penetration “AHA!” Moments others lose. like Amnesty International Treats more routine information processing, this is continuous, Creative thinking It becomes an increasing value.

Quick Mix: Rapid Integrated

Fast combined combinations of excellence in collecting fast information and solving effective problems. When WiFi decreases before an important call, it immediately exploring and repairing errors – Hotspot, restarting the router, connecting to the connection. They cannot continue a story without looking for the name of the missing actor because the accuracy is important for them.

These individuals usually search for unfamiliar concepts immediately, prefer to investigate complex topics before sharing opinions, and search in YouTube for furniture collection videos when the instructions are not clear. They tend to check their phones during boring meetings to stay on and search immediately online restaurants after amazing meals.

Their hidden strength: Quick combinations can quickly connect the points through multiple sources and survive incredibly with fast -changing information. Other people often resort when they need quick and accurate answers.

Style Appendix: Flexible Transformers

The navigators have developed cognitive flexibility – the ability to shift between deep and fast thinking depending on what the situation requires. They try quick repairs when technology fails, then turn into backup plans. They continue to read when facing unfamiliar concepts, but codifying mental notes to search later.

These individuals balance attention in meetings with mental planning. They may write down some fast ideas when they wake up with the minds of the race, and talk about restaurant experiences before checking them online later. They can engage in constant focus when needed, but also using digital tools strategically.

Their hidden strength: The navigators act as a natural bridge between different patterns of thinking and excellence in complex projects that require both research and original thinking.

Why understand your style is important

Each style of thinking is developed as an adaptive with our current environment. In my work with families and individuals, I found that understanding your natural cognitive approach helps you:

  • Choose the tools and environments that amplify your strengths instead of fighting your natural tendencies
  • Learn when you tend to your style and when the situation calls for a different approach
  • Cooperation more effectively with people who think differently
  • Design your work and life to support your best thinking

Moving forward: Working with your mind, not against it

Instead of forcing yourself to one thinking style or assuming that your way is “wrong”, consider monitoring your natural tendencies this week. Note how to respond when technology fails, or when you encounter information gaps, or when processing new experiences. How much is the price? anxiety Are you facing? What is your knee response? Think about small differences to change what does not work well for you. For example, if you find yourself reaching your phone very quickly when searching for a name, try to ask yourself to make three attempts to find it first “without contact” before going to the Internet.

The goal is not to change your thinking style, but to understand and benefit from it. In our sophisticated digital world, cognitive diversity is necessary. Each approach provides unique benefits that the sophisticated world needs. Consider training yourself to work in different aircraft of the movement. Adraka, you can do the same.

To flourish in contemporary times, the key is to identify the strength of natural cognitive strengths while maintaining curiosity about other methods. It may be to understand how your mind has adapted to our digital environment is just an advantage for you.

Miniature exercises for your cognitive style

Notice this week your natural response when you know nothing immediately. Do you get to your phone, sit with uncertainty, or find an average path? This moment of confession – stopping before making a decision – is the place where the super -cognitive power lives.

Or try these exercises for your cognitive style:

  • Deep processors: Get temporarily for 5 minutes before searching for a question
  • Fast mix: trained on the synthesis of 3 sources instead of 10
  • Patterns: Note when switching naturally between the situations

In future posts, I will dive into how these thinking patterns – and why.
