A author of a new study from UCL says.

Previous research has shown that personalities who participate in different types of organized sport tend to contradict. But what is less clear is how the character affects the types of exercises that people already enjoy.

The new study, published in Borders in psychologyExplore whether the individual character features are compatible with the enjoyment of different types of exercises, and whether the participants have completed a specific exercise program, and the subsequent effect on their fitness levels.

The study found many connections between the type of exercise and the character characteristics, including the enjoyment of high -density practice and preference for those who suffer from a nervous feature – associated with people exposed to anxiety – for short shirts of activity instead of long effort.

“We know that the world’s inhabitants have become increasingly increasing. I often heard about people who are trying to become more active, but they are struggling to make permanent changes. In this study, we wanted to understand how the personality can support this for change in the field of changes In the field of health.

“We have found some clear links between the characteristic of the character and the type of exercise that the participants enjoyed more, which I think is important because we can use this knowledge to adapt the recommendations of the individual’s physical activity – and we hope to help them become more active.”

To study, the team evaluated 132 volunteers from the general public with a group of fitness and background levels, who were appointed either for a eight -week biking training program (intervention group), or to a surveillance set for rest1.

Standard fitness levels for participants at the beginning of the program have been evaluated. The force was tested via UPS PRESS, a plate of failure, and anti -jumps (jumping again immediately after landing). This was followed by a 30 -minute low -density biking session, then a biking test to measure the peak of their oxygen (V̇o2 Far test) after short rest.

The team has also evaluated the levels of tension on one to 10 scale, as well as the characteristics of its personality using the BIG 5 model, which is a common personality test in the field of sports and exercise. Five Part Settings of Adult Individuals according to whether their dominant poison is open, compatibility, conscience, nervousness, or openness2.

During the exercise program, the participants were asked to evaluate them with each exercise session, before testing the fitness level again once the program was completed.

Of the 132 beginners, 86 people have completed the intervention and all of these participants became more stronger and stronger regardless of the character.

How the character’s feature affects enjoying enjoyment

Although all character features had a link to fun, many links were revealed by the study.

Open -minded tends to enjoy particularly high -density exercises, such as HIIT and physical fitness test for cycling in the maximum severity.

Those who suffer from a strong nervous feature that is well involved with exercise intervention, but they prefer intense throats instead of long density. They also preferred not to be monitored, such as not recording the heart rate while carrying out the program, which indicates that these individuals may appreciate their space for independence and privacy when engaging in exercise.

Those who have been a conscience tend to get the level of fitness well, which means that they tend to score more in aerobic fitness in addition to the basic strength, and were generally more physically active. However, the conscience did not predict the high enjoyment of a certain thing of exercise. The authors say that this may be because the pronoun individuals tend to be driven by health -related results to engage in physical activity rather than enjoying, indicating that commitment to the program may be less than pleasure than being “good for them.”

Personality effect and exercise on stress

At the beginning of the study, stress levels in the intervention group and the control group were similar. However, the only group with a significant decrease in tension levels after exercising is those who have been largely recorded in the nervous feature.

“We have found that people who were more recorded in a nervous personality feature showed a particularly strong decrease in stress when they trained the recommended fitness in the study. This indicates that there may be special benefits in reducing stress for this feature,” said Professor Paul Borgis, author of the study from the UCL Cognitive Institute.

The researchers concluded that the most important thing people can do to improve their activity levels is to find something they enjoy, which makes it likely to adhere to it.

Notes

  1. The program consists of:
    • Three weekly sessions for changing bicycle riding: a 60 -minute light trip at an easy pace, a 30 -minute threshold ride in a moderate but sustainable effort, or a high -density comma training session where the level of effort varies.
    • A weekly body strength session.
  2. The five features measured in Form 5 BIG 5 are:
    • Example: How vital is an individual, activity, and social, including the amount that the company is searching for and motivation.
    • Compatibility: It involves features related to cooperation, confidence, mercy and the important nature towards others.
    • The pronoun: reflects features such as order, reliability and leadership to achieve goals through careful planning and perseverance.
    • Nervousness: Emotional stability and a tendency to experience negative feelings such as anxiety, mood swings or irritation.
    • Openness: He describes a person’s willingness to experience new experiences and curiosity around the world and imagination.
