Maternal and child health (MCH) is the cornerstone of global public health.

It reflects the comprehensive development, equity and effectiveness of the country’s healthcare system.

Despite significant progress in recent decades, millions of women and children still die every year from preventable causes.

According to the World Health Organization, approximately 287,000 women die annually due to complications related to pregnancy and childbirth, while 5 million children under the age of five die every year, most of them from conditions that could have been prevented or treated.

Major maternal health issues

1. Maternal mortality

Maternal mortality remains a pressing global issue, particularly in sub-Saharan Africa and South Asia. The main causes include severe bleeding (mostly postpartum hemorrhage), infections, high blood pressure during pregnancy (eclampsia and eclampsia), unsafe abortion, and obstructed labor.
