Are you independent or interconnected?

Since the 1990s, social and cultural psychologists have written a lot about a variable called “Serving of Self” (Markus and Kitayama, 2010). Self -interpretation is a fictional term for how people look at themselves and their relationships with others. The variable is usually imagined as a continuous chain, and an entry into one of the parties through an independent (strong) feeling in particular and at the other end through an interconnected (strong) feeling. These concepts or self -understanding are strengthened and maintained by parents, teachers, peers and various cultural practices (Kitayama, 2002).
Independent and interconnected accessories
People have independent Feeling in particular views themselves as free and self -directed, and they are separated from others. Perhaps they grew up in an individual society that emphasizes values such as autonomy, self -sufficiency, individual achievement, and uniqueness, and a race.
People have Interconnected Feeling himself views themselves as psychologically associated with other people. Perhaps they grew up in a collective society that emphasizes values such as social harmony, resource exchange, self -denial, group loyalty, and fulfillment of the individual’s obligations to others.
Most people have a general feeling of where they may fall along this continuity. However, is it possible to measure, with some accuracy, which is independent or interconnected? yes it is. I know at least two ways.
Twenty data test
This test was originally developed by Manfred Kuhn as a way to determine the extent we do Self -concept on me:
(1) Our relationships with others
(2) Our membership is in different groups (Kuhn and McPartland, 1954).
Test is easy. Simply answer the question “Who am I?” 20 times. I am _____. I am _____. In addition to 18 others.
If most of your answers indicate personal features and characteristics, you tend towards an independent end of continuity. I am tall. I am smart. I am a good cook. I am a lesbian. I am Italian.
If most of your answers indicate how you are associated with or associated with other people, you are tending towards the interconnected end of continuity. I am the mother of two children. I am a teacher of Sunday school in my church. I am an assistant coach for high school basketball team. I am grandfather. I am the cafe manager.
Persons x decisions
More accurate and accurate technology is used to measure independence and mutual accreditation network shown below. I call it x decisions. (This version of the test includes six people and seven decisions; it includes a copy of 10 people and 10 decisions.)
It takes time to complete this exercise. First, think again when I was an adult. Then (across the top) is included the most important people or groups in your life at that time. Parents and teachers, for example. A friend or girlfriend. near Brother or sisterGrandfather, members of your church, teammates, brother or women’s club.
Next, insert along the side the most important decisions you will make in the ten years to 20 years. any Professional life To follow up, who marries, where to live, whether to accept a job offer, whether you have a child, whether it is Divorce-like this. Finally, put an examination mark in each box that connects a person (or set) with a decision. People who will significantly affect (or affected) the decisions you make.
If you determine a relatively few, for example from 5 to 10, you are said to have an independent of the self. You make important decisions mostly yourself and yourself.
If you specify many boxes, for example from 25 to 35, it is said that you have an interconnected vision. It is supposed to be strongly connected to an extended family and different groups such as school colleagues, clubs and sports teams. Maybe even the company you work in. When you make important decisions, you are considering how your decision affects others in your life.
It may also have been guessed, usually Westerners think about them in terms of independence, and Asians usually think in the east in terms of interconnection (White, 2021). As women, on average, are more associated with men, though sex The difference is not like a cultural difference. These self -evidents are also associated with different cognitive patterns (i.e. usual thinking methods), but this is another story for another day.
