Weight loss interventions, including infectious surgery and drugs that prevent the absorption of food fats, can be invasive or have negative side effects. Now, the researchers have developed an edible Microbeads made of green tea, vitamin E and seaweed that, when consumed, are associated with fat in the digestive system. Initial results of tests feeding on high -fat meal mice showed that this approach to losing weight may be safer and more accessible than surgery or pharmaceutical preparations.

Yue Wu, a graduate student at Sichuan University, will present the results of her team at the Autumn 2025 digital meeting, a meeting of the American Chemical Society.

“Loss of weight can help some people prevent long -term health problems such as diabetes and heart disease,” says Wu. “Our microbeads works directly in the intestine to prevent fat absorption in an expanded and gentle way.”

Weight gain causes genetic factors and lifestyle, including eating a high -fat diet. A high -fat diet is defined by the US Department of Agriculture as the ones that come with 35 % or more of a person’s daily calories of fat, instead of protein or carbohydrates. Some medications, such as Orlistat, prevent some infectious enzymes from destroying food fats, which leads to the absorption of the body less than fat. Orlistat is a certified food and drug (FDA) and is effective for weight loss. However, for some people, it causes serious side effects, including liver and kidney damage.

Therefore, Wu and her colleagues wanted to target fat absorption with weight loss, but they would do so without negative side effects. “We want to develop something that works with how people eat and usually live,” says Wu.

To start, the team created small plants based on plants that are formed automatically through a series of chemical bonds between green tea polyphenols and vitamin E. These structures can form chemical formations for fat drops and serve as a binding essence of microbes. Then the researchers painted the fields in a natural polymer derived from seaweed to protect them from the acidic environment of the stomach. Once you eat, the protective polymer paint is expanded in response to acid hydrogen, and bolifinol is linked to green tea and vitamin E compounds partially obsessed in the intestine.

The microbes are almost without flavor, and the researchers expect to easily integrate them into people’s meals. For example, microbeads can be converted into small Tabioca or Buba balls and added to sweets and bubble tea.

The researchers evaluated Microbeads as a treatment for weight loss in mice. They put animals in three groups (eight mice per group), those that have been fed up a high -fat diet (60 % of the fat) either with or without microbeads and those that have been nurtured a natural diet (10 % of the fat) for 30 days. Mice feed on high -fat diet and microbes:

  • 17 % of total body weight lost, while mice in other groups did not lose weight.
  • Reduce the fatty tissues and less damage to the liver compared to the mice feed on high -fat and natural meals without miclvesters.
  • More fat is secreted in their stools compared to rats that have not been given microbes. Additional fats in mice stools had no clear effects on animal health.

In addition, the eight mice on the high -fat meals that microbeads consumed the similar intestinal fat secretions, but without the intestinal side effects that the researchers have noticed with a fourth group of mice with which they dealt with orlistat.

Wu and her team started working with a biotechnology company to manufacture factory beads. “All ingredients are of the food degree and the approval of the Food and Drug Administration, and their production can be increased easily,” says Yunxiang He, Associate Professor at the University of Sichuan and co -author of the WU show.

They also started a human clinical trial in cooperation with West China Hospital at Sichuan University. “This represents a big step towards the clinical translation of polyphenols -based microbes, after our foundational results,” says Wu. “We have officially registered 26 participants in the trial of researchers, and we expect the initial data available next year.”

address Microbial microbes depend on orally with a removal of synergy and lock of fats to treat obesity

a summary Excessive fat intake is closely related to the increasing spread of obesity and associated metabolic disorders. Orlistat is the only drug approved by the Food and Drug Administration to reduce fat absorption; However, uncomfortable fats in the colon can cause severe side effects. Here, we reported a micropide of polyphenols by locking the fat (PMFL) made of green tea polyphenols, dietary fiber (genes), and Da-Tocopherol that embodies and excludes efficiently a wide range of food fat derivatives in the intestine. Mechanically, PMFL microbuts pick up the emulsion drops actively by stretching the intestinal hydrogen and facilitating the process of removing multiple molecular reaction and locking fat. Mice with high -fat diet that are given orally showed weight, weight loss by 17.02 %, accompanied by low fatty tissues, liver damage, and low blood fat levels. It is worth noting that the mice showed a direct secretion of the stool that contains fat without side effects or glucose fluctuations in the blood. It provides our work as a basis for new food strategies to combat obesity.
